Fifth great stay at this very conveniently located hotel

Just made my fifth stay at the Double Tree by Hilton Amsterdam Central Station. My wife and I spent six nights in April 2024. We very much enjoyed our stay. Our room was newly refurbished, comfortable, efficient, and clean. Our king bed room also had a couch and a small table with two chairs. That was a very useful feature. The room was modest size, but had adequate storage space and a small but well designed bathroom. Large picture windows gave us a nice view of the city. We originally picked this hotel, several years ago, for its convenience to the city’s central railroad station and trams. It’s also convenient to restaurants and shops, including a grocery store next door. It’s also close to the cruise ship terminal. We keep coming back because the rooms are nice and the staff is friendly and helpful. I want to highlight Ilias, at the reception desk, who really exceeded our expectations when we made a request. His courtesy and consideration was much appreciated after a tiring day of touring. Also, Christina, who welcomed us for breakfast in the restaurant every day with a broad smile and a real desire to make sure we were happy. She helped to get our days off to a great start. We plan to keep making the Doubletree our hotel in future visits to Amsterdam

Our room was comfortable and updated. We asked for an upgraded room, and for a small fee, we were able to check into our room @ 10:00 a.m. Well worth it since we had traveled internationally. The restaurant for breakfast and dinner was great and reasonably priced. The bar has a great view of the city and yummy snacks.

Quite disappointing

The room is quite spartan and simple. The food in the restaurant for dinner is quite so so. The indian curry chicken on the menu is quite horrendous. But as far as my experience goes, the food in the bar is not bad. Most of all the service is quite bad. I arrived around 1pm, and I was asked to pay 30 euros if I want to check in a room. Otherwise I had to wait till 3pm. I said you already have a room available, why not let me in. The answer was that somebody else could be willing to pay the 30 euros. Given that I was a Hilton Honors member with some accumulated points, they gave me a discount so that I paid 15 euros to check in. I have to say that over my 25 years of extensive business and personal travel experience around the world, this kind of exacting extra money from customers is quite a new experience for me. It is not even wise to run a business like this. For a small amount of money to make customers uncomfortable I am not sure it is beneficial to the business in the long run. I had to leave one day early so I ended up paying one night for free given that I made a nonrefundable reservation. I am not complaining about this. But I did feel quite bad that they initially made it so difficult for me when I asked whether I can leave a piece of small luggage with them for two days. The luggage service guy mentioned a few things to make it sound difficult to accommodate my request. I mentioned that I am giving up one night's payment so I am just asking for a small favor if they could kindly consider my payment for nothing. In the end he relented and said yes. But the experience is quite awful. I almost always stay in a 5-star hotel, this time I am staying in this 4-star hotel due to its proximity to the train station. But I had expected better experience than this.

Great location - some service gaps

Fantastic location - close to all public transport and walkable into the city. The room was great and breakfast had a large variety. Employees all friendly and outgoing and delivery of Hilton diamond benefits was good. The downsides - apparently the housekeeping staff does not check the wall mounted bottles of soaps and amenities in the bathroom to ensure they actually have any product in them. It took two days and three requests to get shower gel in our bathroom filled. We had none, it was completely empty upon check in and the next day. Also, two requests to fill the empty conditioner bottle and two requests to have a blown light replaced in the bedroom before request was fulfilled. The room is very dark and having just one bulb blown was a big impact. Also, there a sign in the bath about conserving the environment and reusing towels by hanging them up, which we did each day. The housekeeping staff still took them to wash every day. So much for being environmental. Overall a great hotel and nice room - just a theme of needing to make multiple requests to get needed room amenities provided.
